The Astra-Gnome, 1956 – A ‘Time and Space Car’

A concept car created by industrial designer Richard Arbib for American Motors. Using a 1955 Nash Metropolitan chassis, it features space travel themes like the Hamilton ‘celestial time-zone clock permitting actual flight-type navigation’, and an acrylic glass bubble canopy which also serves as a sound chamber for the car’s high fidelity radio and record player.

The Astra-Gnome was featured on the 3 September 1956 cover of Newsweek magazine and was a popular highlight in its debut at the 1956 New York International Auto Show.

Lost and then relocated in New York in 1980, the Astra-Gnome was restored and can now be seen at the Metropolitan Pit Stop Museum in Los Angeles, CA.
