Along with Tower Records, Licorice Pizza was probably the hippest record chain in southern California in the 1970s. Starting with a single Long Beach location in 1969, throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s Licorice Pizza expanded rapidly with 34 stores at its peak.

Sold off in 1986 at the height of the video rental boom, many Licorice Pizza locations during 1987 became either Musicland or Sam Goody.
